Experimenting With Social Media

Hello Friends!

How was your summer? In a related question, how is it already September? The older I get, the more I realize that 90% of aging is being more and more surprised at how fast time flies. I need to start making holiday cards and soaking raisins in rum for fruit cakes before I blink and it’s 2027 already.

What the heck have I been working on?

Good question! I’ve started making little videos for Instagram and Facebook. If you know me, you’re probably wondering what the flip has happened to me. I hate having my picture taken, hate being on camera. And here I am, doing both, to myself, voluntarily? WTF is a really fair question.

The answer is kinda selfish. I have a goldfish memory, especially when it comes to things I learn when making art. I’ll have a realization, feel pretty great about it, and then POOF! It’s gone. My theory is because I don’t have an opportunity to really reflect on it. Journaling helps a little, but that’s pretty temporary too. So I thought, what if I try recording myself working, and then edit a short video together. That process will require more critical thinking about what I’ve done and why, and how I can use what I’ve learned going forward. And then I’ll have something I can post online that might be interesting to some folks.

It started with looking back at the sketchbooks I’ve filled in the past year, and sorta went on from there. This video talks more about the why.

So far, it has helped me stay more focused. But it’s also been a steep learning process that’s taken more time than I thought (ain’t that always the way?). So I haven’t had a whole lot of time to make art.

But I have done some.

Garden Brags

Sure, my broccoli didn’t flower, and my pepper plant is putting all of its energy into producing one solitary, tiny pepper. But, SUNFLOWERS! Including one that’s like 8 or 9 feet tall.
